Abstract

This study attempts to analyse quantatively research publications published by the scientists of National Institute of Occupational Health (ICMR) Ahmedabad, India, during 2000-2006. The indicate that:

1. More publications are observed in journals dealing in occupational health and occupational medicine, which is related to institutional research field;

2. Multiple author articles are more than single author articles because research format in occupational health is multi-disciplinary; to carry out research in multiple disciplines/parameter you require more scientists; and

3. Core subject in Occupational Health is Occupational Medicine and Occupational Medicine department produces more publications.

Abstract

The idea that we live in an information society is commonplace today. The information society is one in which the communication of information is one of the key activities in all developed and developing nations, and where information is a key factor in economic development. In consequence, professional librarians must be people equipped with a variety of skills to help them to perform diverse roles which effectively facilitate freedom of access to information by the literate and non-literate, so that they can acquire knowledge, develop good governance and democracy, alleviate poverty, exploit technological change and maintain social equality. In spite of the rapid growth in both the scope and diversity of information available today, the development of information services has not been the same everywhere. A large factor in development, or under -development, of information services in any given country is a function of society's perception of the importance of such services in its decision-making process.

Abstract

Due to rapid changes in communication technology, publications are also published in electronic form, but they have to face some problems out of which one is cost and secondly copyright act. Costing models are shown which includeds the direct and indirect costs along with how to calculate the cost. Copyright law was originally formed to cope with the printing press. It has been partially modified to the take account of the electronic age. Some suggestions are given in this regard.

Abstract

The rapid development of information technologies and specifically electronic publishing capabilities - leads many in the library community. There may be ways to ease the pressure. The (presumably) reduced cost associated with editing, producing, storing and distributing electronic content has led to the hope in some quarters that journals might actually decline, or that an alternate, less expensive publishing model might emerge. Electronic publishing provides for an unregulated access to reliable information for academicians, researchers, practioners and policy makers alike from all parts of the world. This review looks at some of the issues related to e-publishing and highlights the nature and scope of the electronic publications.

Abstract

Librarians and information scientists have been evaluating journals for at least 75 years. The impact factor is a very useful tool for evaluation of journals, but it must be used discreetly. Considerations included the amount of review or other types of material published in a journal, variations between disciplines and item-by-item impact. The Impact factor has been used for years to evaluate journals quality. The appropriate use of the impact factor is to understand its limitations. Many factors contribute to the number of citations per paper, including the science the nature of the research; the style of communication; editorial policy; circulation and readership; citation bias; conformism; authors tendency to cite their own work; and reference; self promotion. In addition to those already reported. a further limitation of this, the amount of circulation of information through web. The journals status with regard to coverage in the lSI database as well as the occurrence of a title change is also very important. Impact factor is not a perfect tool to measure the quality of article but there is nothing better and it has the advantage of already being in existence and is therefore, a good technique for scientific evaluation. Experience has shown that in each specialty the best journals are those in which it is most difficult to have an article accepted. and these are the journals that have.an impact factor. These journals existed long before the impact factor was devised. The use of impact factor as a measure of quality is wide spread for it fits well with the opinion, in each field of the best journals in each specialty.
